But she ran out of leaves. Or honey. I can’t remember which. “It doesn’t matter,” she said. She told me the mantra and we repeated it together. She also told the same mantra to the other hundred or so people who came to see her. I’ve used that mantra off and on for the past 20 years. Another spiritual teacher gave me a mantra, but it was just for me. He told it to me privately in a closed room, and he instructed me to never repeat it to anyone. He said that keeping it a secret was part of the power of the mantra. I wasn’t sure whether I believed that, but I have kept it a secret for several years. You probably know what a mantra is, but I’d like to tell you about a woman who found a magic lamp in her backyard. Well, she rubbed it of course, because that’s what you do, and a genie came out. “Tell me what to do,” he said. “Is this one of those three wish deals?” the woman responded. “Not at all,” said the genie. “I’m at your service forever.” The woman had the genie clean the house, do the laundry, and cook dinner. “What next?” asked the genie. “Oh, neuter the cat, I guess.” “Done!” the genie reported. “What next?” “Umm, shear the hamster?” the woman offered. “Done! What next?” asked the genie. “That’s it!” exclaimed the woman, “why don’t you take a break.” “It doesn’t work that way,” the genie said, now beginning to appear more oppressive than helpful. “Give me something to do or I’ll eat you!” The startled woman was quick on her feet and answered, “Ok, I’ve got it. Climb up that flagpole. When you get to the top, slide down. Then climb up again, slide down again, and just keep doing that until I think of something else for you to do.” It worked, and the woman didn’t get eaten. The genie is like the mind. The flagpole routine is the primary role of a mantra. Not only does the genie/mind demand constant attention, it gets in the way of our accessing the spiritual dimension and experiencing spaciousness in our consciousness. It tends to take up the whole frame. A mantra gives the mind something to focus on, which, over time (meaning both over the course of each meditative session and over the course of using it day after day), greatly diminishes the degree to which the mind dominates our awareness. Often, what starts out as a mechanical recitation of a word or phrase (usually silently) becomes something more like a self-replicating wave that occupies the mind while our consciousness expands and transcends it. Of course, every time we sit to recite a mantra doesn’t produce a transcendent or mystical experience, but it’s quite common to feel peaceful and expansive. Besides simply occupying the mind to facilitate meditation, mantras sometimes have other purposes. Some believe that mantras, through their sonic quality and/or meaning, produce a spiritual or therapeutic effect. Certain mantras are meant to be spoken aloud; others can be “spoken” mentally. Some are meant to open a particular part of the body or aspect of consciousness, to express devotion, to invoke or “install” a certain deity, or to elicit a change of fortune. Using a mantra with a meaning you understand may have the additional benefit of aligning your intention around a positive idea. On the other hand, using a mantra in a language you don’t know or one without any meaning frees you from getting analytical about it. There are short mantras and long mantras. I recommend a shorter one for silent meditation, since it’s easier to remember. The shortest one syllable mantras are sometimes called bija or “seed” mantras, such as Om, Aim (“aeem”), Shrim (“shreem”), Hrim (“hreem”), Krim (“cream”), Hum, Hu (“hue”), Ram (“rahm”), Vam (“vahm”), Ham (“hahm”), Ong, God, and Love. Two-syllable mantras go well with the breath, since you can say/think the first syllable on the inhale and the second on the exhale. Some common ones include Shanti (peace), So-Ham (I am that [Divine]), Ham-sa (swan, also an inversion of So-Ham), Sat Nam (I am Truth), and one of my favorites, Open. Common longer mantras include Om Namah Shivaya, Om Mani Padme Hum (or Om Mani Peme Hung), and Nam Myoho Renge Kyo. There are thousands more. Read about these if you're interested. You may wish to find one that seems suited to your spiritual sensibilities, or one that just feels good to say. There are lots of great books and sites on mantras to explore. As for the notion that a mantra should be kept secret, some teachers will say that a mantra loses its power if it’s shared. At best this is superstition. At worst, it’s a pretentious attempt to control students, maintain hierarchy, generate mystique, and keep people coming back to pay for increasingly “higher level” mantras. And now I’m going to tell you the “secret” mantra I received: it’s hring. Try it out if you feel like it. Though I have some disdain for secrecy around mantras, I do believe there’s sometimes value in being selective about sharing the details of your spiritual experiences. Attempts to explain these experiences in words often fall short, and if you share with someone who isn’t receptive, doesn’t understand, or criticizes the experience, this may diminish its significance for you or cause you to doubt yourself. It’s also worth asking yourself why you’re sharing these experiences. Sometimes we do so to better understand them or to be instructive or inspiring to others. Other times it’s because the ego has co-opted our spiritual experiences and is using them to get approval. So it’s a good idea to make sure you’re sharing for the right reasons, you can withstand judgment without losing conviction in your practice, or otherwise to share only with those who can hear you in a non-critical way. This week I recommend that you try meditating with a mantra. Choose one from above or find one you like online or from a book. Sit comfortably and repeat your chosen mantra silently, at a speed that feels comfortable to you. If your mind wanders, just bring it back to the mantra. See if, compared to simply watching the breath, this makes it easier to enter a relaxed or expansive state. It’s important to be able to see where you want to go or who you want to be, and to project yourself toward that evolution. Yet, it’s common to make a resolution, experience some initial excitement, and eventually revert to old habits. So let’s explore some common hurdles and strategies for success. First, there’s the challenge of structure. Without a plan, most resolutions are doomed to fail. If you use our Dreambook, we lay out the steps clearly there. For those who don’t have it, I’ll share some key principles. Before launching the plan, a goal should be dissected into all of the simplest, actionable tasks involved. These will go into your calendar with a specific date and time (and an end time). When it’s time to do one of these tasks, there should be no need to figure out what it entails. Then treat it like you would a meeting with a respected client or a medical appointment that has a no-show fee – i.e., non-negotiable. Even if your resolution is a lifestyle change that’s the goal in itself – such as eating healthier, meditating daily, or exercising – it’s still useful to have a plan so that you know exactly how you’ll make it a reality. For instance, resolving “I’m going to meditate every day in 2022” is great. But as soon as the first busy day of the year comes, if you haven’t already determined when, where, and how that meditation will occur, before you know it you’ll realize you missed a day (or a month). Get the details worked out beforehand. Second, it’s easy to make a resolution without putting much intention – i.e., personal power – behind it, and the result is usually disappointing. It’s beneficial, if you really want the resolution to take, to create some sort of ritual around launching it. (This, too, we cover in greater detail in the Dreambook.) I know it just seems like an extra step, but you won’t regret it. Here are some ideas. First, write down the resolution as clearly as possible, in strong, positive language. Do something special (candles, music, dance, unique clothing, deep breathing, being in nature, etc.) to get yourself into a non-ordinary state. Focus your energy. Read the words you’ve chosen – out loud – so you can hear yourself stating what you are going to do. Visualize the resolution happening in your life, feeling how it will feel. You could even imagine looking back a year from now and feeling proud of yourself for having followed through and delighted by the results of your commitment. Consider all the ways in which this resolution will support your highest good and the highest good of others in your life. Choose to honor the power of your word. Third, add ritual to the tasks or practices themselves. The more special you make it, the more likely you are to feel satisfied by it, which helps to heighten the benefit and reinforce its permanency. Make it easy to do it by having all the necessary resources at the ready. Make it something you look forward to by adding elements of sweetness to it (we go deeply into this concept in our audiobook The Well Life). Turning it into a ritual adds depth to it, so it’s not just a mechanical task but a meaningful anchor point. Fourth, keep choosing the right attitude. Your aspirations deserve an appropriate measure of reverence. As much as we may try, it’s not really possible to fool ourselves when it comes to the spirit of our participation. You’ve already chosen what you’re going to do. You can either follow through on your choice or not. If you don’t, you’ll notice you didn’t honor an agreement with yourself and this may hurt your self-trust. If you do follow through, you can do it enthusiastically – like you love yourself, like you want this, like your life is a gift – or you can do it grudgingly, like attending a party when you wish you were home watching Netflix. This, too, you’ll notice. It’s an unspoken communication from you to you. Remember to re-read your original intention on a regular basis – with feeling. It’s significant. I hope these suggestions help you make positive changes that improve your life and the lives around you. The story goes that he was speaking to a group of students (who saw him as an enlightened master), and he whispered, “Do you want to know my secret?” At this, the room fell silent and everyone leaned forward. Then he continued, “I don’t mind what happens.” What I like about this idea is that it’s simple; it speaks of a state of transcendence of the ego and unshakable peace. But as an expression of absolute spiritual truth, it also lends itself to spiritual bypassing and illusions about spirituality. The tricky thing about Krishnamurti’s statement is that he was presumably speaking not from his ego but from an expanded state of consciousness, his higher Self. Thus, while not minding what happens was his outlook from this state, it’s not necessarily the path that got him there. In Krishnamurti’s case, he went through a series of spontaneous, often painful experiences over many years that caused an opening of his consciousness. That’s not something we can replicate at will. So what can we garner from this “secret”? It’s a good opening to a discussion on how we relate to absolute spiritual truths while existing in a world of relativity. Even among non-dual spiritual traditions (meaning, all the world is considered to be an expression of one great Being, and separation is an illusion), there is often a distinction made between the Source in an absolute sense (which is formless) and the many forms it takes in the relative world. In the realm of the relative, which is where the majority of human minds dwell, relativity directs nearly every aspect of our lives. For instance, when we say something is good, we’re usually not coming from the experience that the universe is fundamentally Good, and therefore all of its expressions are imbued with that same essence of goodness. What we mean is that things are good relative to some other way they could be. Thus, we’re directed toward things that we perceive as better than our other options and away from things that seem worse. And absolute spiritual truths – like “the universe is fundamentally good” – are simply lofty concepts to most people. We do get glimpses of them though (as I’ve written about in my articles on “gaps” in the dominant egocentric state), and these often fuel a drive for spiritual awakening. People who have gone through a certain form of spiritual awakening (what’s sometimes referred to as enlightenment, liberation, or moksha) often describe it as an experience of becoming perpetually conscious of the absolute. This doesn’t make the relative disappear, but the awareness of the undying oneness that unifies all apparent differences enables them to play in relativity without the “high stakes” feeling – and the anxiousness and drama that go with it – that most humans experience. This is why it’s referred to as liberation, which can be a very appealing notion to anyone who wants to be happy. So, apparently from this state, Krishnamurti said, “I don’t mind what happens” because, in an absolute sense, nothing is ever wrong. Nor is there such a thing as tragedy or victory. To win a race just means one part of the Source crossed the finish line before another part of the same Source (or God beat God, if you prefer that name). Likewise, the death of any given expression of the Source is akin to a red blood cell dying and being recycled into a new blood cell; the Whole has lost nothing in the process. It's important to recognize that an absolute spiritual truth is different from an uplifting life principle or a good piece of advice. If someone told you their “secret” is “Focus on the good” or “Don’t sweat the small stuff” or “Practice gratitude” or “Don’t take anything personally” you could immediately adopt it and start living it. But to a person who hasn’t realized and directly experienced it, an absolute truth isn’t actionable in the same way. And in relative terms, the absolute may make no sense at all. Imagine that a dog is biting your leg and you think to yourself, “I’m going to be spiritual about this. What did Krishnamurti say? Oh yeah, I don’t mind what happens. I guess I’d better breathe through this. Whew, that’s a lot of blood. Do I just let him keep gnawing? I don’t mind. I don’t mind. I don’t mind. If I call 9-1-1, does that constitute “minding”?” I doubt many people would take an unrealized spiritual truth to this extent, but as you can imagine, it’s possible to get into some trouble this way.
