Your Calm, in Your Pocket

When the day winds you tight, warm a little Steady between your palms, breathe it in, and feel your shoulders drop. A botanical calming balm and a thirty-second ritual - calm you can carry anywhere.

You know the day. Up before everyone, holding it all together, shoulders somewhere up around your ears by four o'clock. And when you finally lie down, your body's spent but your mind is still going - replaying the day, rehearsing tomorrow.

You can't always change what the day throws at you. You can change how you respond to it. A dab in your palms, three real breaths, rub it in, and you feel yourself settle - all in about the time it took to read this paragraph.

That's Steady. Your pocket spa, for the days that ask too much of you.

A spa ritual small enough to carry

For more than twenty years, people have come to The Dragontree to put their day down for an hour - to let the body unwind, the mind settle, and the spirit reconnect under a therapist's hands. Steady is that feeling, distilled into a balm that lives in your bag.

Ten seconds, wherever you are - the doorway before you enter your home, the pause before a hard conversation, the moment you finally turn off the light. It works because scent is the fastest way back to calm we have - a single breath of the right aromas settle the body in a way that talking yourself down never quite manages. Steady gives your nervous system a cue it learns to trust.

Old-world botanicals you won't find in a drugstore

Most calming products lean on a little lavender and call it a day. Steady is built from rare, resinous, deeply grounding plants - the ones traditional healers reached for across centuries, layered the way a perfumer builds a fragrance and a clinician builds a formula.

Jatamansi – an ancient root prized for grounding and used in sacred anointing for thousands of years, true unadulterated jatamansi is exceedingly difficult to find.
Whole-Resin Frankincense – the temple resin, warm and centering, the heart of the blend, extracted to pull out the deeper, relaxing notes rather than the bright ones found in the essential oil.
Vetiver – deep, earthy, and steadying, the scent of feeling your feet on the ground.
Borneol – a fragrant crystal from the Chinese herbal tradition, borneol belongs to a revered class of aromatics said to “open the orifices”: to clear, awaken, and bring one back to oneself. True, non-synthetic borneol is a treasure.
Beta Caryophyllene – a terpene made famous by the cannabis world for its grounding, soothing, and body-relaxing character, it is also found in a variety of spices (ours is extracted from cloves)
Cedar – like a deep breath in the forest. Cedar is one of four central sacred herbs in Native American traditions, often used to clear the mind and dispel negativity
Bulgarian Rose – one of the most universally steadying scents, true Bulgarian rose absolute is precious material.
Hops – with a long history of use in pillows to promote sleep, this CO2 extract brings a bittersweet green scent while calming the nervous system.
Bisabolol – the gentle heart of chamomile, natural alpha-bisabolol lends a soft sweetness to this formula
Magnolia Bark – used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for its descending action on the energy of the body (Qi), this herb has an anchoring effect

100% natural. No synthetic fragrance, no fillers, no shortcuts - the way everything we make has always been.

Made by the person who knows these plants best

Steady comes from our co-founder, Dr. Peter Borten - a botanist, clinical herbalist, and doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine who has spent 35 years studying the plants and practices that bring an overstimulated body back to ease.

He didn't reach for what's trendy. He went to the old apothecary - the resins burned in temples, the roots used for grounding across centuries, the flowers prized for calm long before anyone called it self-care - and composed them into a single balm built for exactly the kind of stress we're all carrying now.

He made it first for the people he loves, on their hardest days. Now it's yours too.

The thirty-second ritual that travels with you

Warm it. Rub a little Steady between your palms until the aroma blooms.
Breathe it in. Cup your hands over your face, close your eyes, and take three slow breaths. On the inhale, bring your breath all that way down to your pelvis. On the exhale let everything go and make the outbreath complete.
Anoint and settle. Rub into your temples, your chest, your navel, or your feet.

Do it in the morning to set the tone. Do it at your desk when the afternoon tightens. Do it as your final ritual before sleep, so your body learns the signal: the day is really, truly over.

Each point is significant. The temples are like a pressure release valve, where we naturally reach when the head feels too full. The chest is the domain of breath and heart, the place we touch when we say “me,” and a region we often tighten when stressed. The navel is honored across many traditions as the body's center, the original portal of perfect nourishment. To anoint it is to return to center. And the feet reflect the old wisdom of both Western naturopathic and East Asian traditions: bringing attention to the bottom of the body draws it away from the top. Applying Steady Balm to the feet anchors a busy, racing mind and helps you remember your roots.

The more you use it, the faster it works - because you're teaching your body to find its steady state on cue.

Keep it where the day gets hard

In your bag, for the 4pm shoulders and the chest that goes tight before you've even noticed why.
On your desk, for the reset between the thing you just finished and the thing you can't focus on yet.
In your pocket, for the breath before you walk through your own front door and become "on" all over again.
On the nightstand, for when your body's tired but your brain didn't get the memo.

We believe that it makes sense that your nervous system is activated so often. Don’t scold yourself for it.

It’s just the primitive, animalistic self trying to keep you safe in a topsy-turvy world. However, it’s simply not useful most of the time, and what’s worse, being “activated” degrades our quality of life. It takes us out of the moments we want to enjoy. It makes us forget that we have so much to be grateful for.

This is why we all need ways to steady ourselves and get back to the here and now.

The Dragontree promise

Frequently Asked Questions
