Give What You Wish to Receive

on

Conscious gift-giving allows us to reduce waste and think beyond simply adding more “stuff” to the lives of those we care about. Even for people who enjoy having things, what if we could give them something that truly nurtures their highest good?

Studies have shown that experiences bring us more lasting happiness than material possessions. This holiday season, consider gifting experiences instead of objects. For example, a foot bath, massage, facial, or acupuncture treatment can be memorable, enjoyable, and deeply relaxing. These kinds of gifts not only show care but also encourage health and well-being—a win/win for both giver and recipient.

Here are some other ideas for “experience gifts”:

  • Memberships: museum, zoo, athletic club, or community center.

  • Classes: music, dance, pilates, cooking, yoga, ceramics, painting, writing, singing, woodworking, glassblowing, tai chi, flying an airplane, meditation, surfing, herbal medicine, beekeeping, or crafting.

  • Adventures: ziplining, skydiving, scuba diving, river rafting, rock climbing, or cave exploring.

  • Travel: airfare, lodging, or even a special meal.

Another meaningful approach is to offer gifts that serve as symbols, hold an intention, or act as reminders of something we wish to embody. A small, thoughtfully chosen physical object can carry deep meaning—beautiful both in form and as a reflection of an ideal. For example, our sacred jewelry is designed to honor the wearer’s journey, serving as a daily reminder of inner strength, resilience, or a spiritual connection. Gifting something imbued with intention can become a cherished touchstone in the recipient’s life, reminding them of the ideals they hold dear..

You could also offer the gift of service. A custom gift certificate might include house cleaning, garage organization, painting a room, washing a car, dog walking, cooking dinner, babysitting, lawn care, snow shoveling, or help with a long-overdue project. Offering your time and effort is not only thoughtful and cost-effective but also strengthens your connection with the recipient.

For those in need, consider giving back. For instance, creating “care packages” for homeless individuals—filled with essentials like a toothbrush, toothpaste, snacks, socks, and hand sanitizer—can make a big difference. If assembling care packages isn’t feasible, meal vouchers or haircut vouchers can provide much-needed support and dignity to someone struggling.

Finally, this holiday season and beyond, I encourage you to give what you wish to receive. This can be a powerful practice, both internally and externally. If you long for support and approval, offer those to others. If you seek peace and joy, inspire others to experience peace and joy. If you desire abundance, view the world through the lens of abundance. Wish abundance for others, spend your resources with a mindset of flow, and trust in the natural cycle of giving and receiving.

May your inner light always guide you,
Peter
