Many years ago, Briana called me, sounding distressed. A heavy table had fallen on her foot and she couldn’t walk. A friend drove her home, and I ran outside to meet her. I carried her up about 30 stairs and laid her on the couch.
As a Doctor of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, I’m trained in Western clinical diagnosis, but I prefer to treat things naturally whenever possible. Still, when I looked at her foot, my heart sank. It was purple and swollen to almost the size of a football. She said the pain was nearly unbearable.
I was concerned she might need to go to the ER, but I asked myself for a little time. A few hours to see what I could do.
I had a pharmacy of hundreds of herbs and essential oils at my disposal, so I started grinding and blending plants for severe blunt trauma, including some traditionally used for broken bones. I wrapped them in cheesecloth, soaked them in hot water, and applied the poultice to her foot.
She winced when I first laid it on her swollen skin, but soon said it felt soothing. We sat together while I rewarmed the poultice, talking, waiting, hoping. Within an hour, the swelling had reduced considerably, and she said the pain was minimal. By dinnertime, she could walk on it. I bundled the herbs around her foot and tucked her into bed.
By morning, there was just a faint discoloration. The swelling and pain were gone. The next day, she wore heels and worked a full shift on her feet with zero pain.
We were both amazed. And honestly, deeply moved, especially Briana. It felt like we had witnessed something we couldn’t keep to ourselves.
Our kitchen became a laboratory for the next couple of years. I compared herbs from different sources, refined extraction methods, and experimented with carrier oils to create something both effective and consistent. I also learned the hard way not to rub my eyes after working with certain herbs.
Eventually, Muscle Melt was born.
It is my mission to help you understand and overcome your pain so you can return to the life that’s waiting for you. There is something profoundly meaningful about helping people resolve long-standing pain, about watching someone get a piece of themselves back.
What would you do if you were free from pain? I’d truly love to hear.
Be well,
Dr. Peter Borten
