In previous articles we looked at ways to see more dimensions of an issue in order to facilitate its resolution. After sitting a few times with spiritual teacher Leslie Temple-Thurston about 20 years ago, I learned this “squares” approach in her book The Marriage of Spirit and have used it and expanded on it ever since. Rather than seeing “two sides of the coin,” we’d do well to look at (at least) four interconnected aspects to any challenging pattern. While our attachment to one positions tends to keep us stuck, when we see that we contain all of these aspects, this quickly dissipates the intense “charge” around the issue and we can let it go.
Since issues around money and abundance are so prevalent, I thought I’d share a square on the dualities of attraction and aversion intersected with scarcity versus abundance. It’s easy for most people to feel into the attraction to abundance (upper right quadrant) and the aversion to scarcity (lower left quadrant).
What about the aversion to abundance and the attraction to scarcity? It may seem incomprehensible that you’d be drawn toward scarcity (upper left), but it’s within all of us. Maybe when you’re poor it makes you feel you’re more “real,” more relatable, more connected to the common person, or more right about the belief that life is unfair.
It may also seem incomprehensible that you’d be averse to abundance (lower right), but perhaps you have fears about a truly abundant life: maybe it will be harder, maybe it will be unfamiliar, maybe you’ll have no excuse not to be happy. Maybe you think abundance would change you in negative way. Maybe you think people would expect you to support them.
If you feel challenged by abundance and scarcity, I encourage you to spend time visiting with each of these four states. Write freely about each one, acknowledging that all four are within you. See what arises in your body as you steep in each zone. If you have our book, Freedom, you can use that body-centered releasing process to neutralize the feelings that come up. As you make peace with the whole complex, you’ll feel less “baggage” around the idea of having an abundant life.
Be well,
Peter

This time last year we were in the midst of the covid crisis, a race crisis, and an intense presidential race. I wrote that a good plan and a strong foundation in your values and purpose would help you feel more stable, clear, and capable of navigating upcoming uncertainty. (And I explained how the Dreambook is an ideal tool for this.)
A year later, circumstances are a bit different, but my message hasn’t changed. Even if covid and climate change were gone, uncertainty is always a constant. So, while it’s impossible to know what the next moment will bring, who you are is a variable you can control.
The Dreambook began from my and Briana’s desire to create a life organization system that helps people prioritize wellness and personal growth. But as we began writing it, we realized that the system needed to begin with orienting users to their true selves. Your plans will be limited if you don’t know what your starting point is, what kind of potential you have, and what your “soul drives” are.
So the book opens with questions designed to illuminate…
- who you are
- where you are in life
- what kind of person you want to be
- what’s most important to you
- what gives you satisfaction
- the gifts, values, and purpose you’re here to share
- what growth might look like
Besides filling out this part of the Dreambook, I encourage you to meditate on who you would be if you had no fear, if there were no judgment (from others or yourself), and if you had unlimited grace, strength, patience, vision, wisdom, kindness, and love at your disposal. Who would you be if you let your Highest Self sit in the driver’s seat?
Clarify this image of yourself. Write about it. Visualize it. When you remember, and especially in challenging moments, ask yourself, “How would Highest Self behave in this situation?” Embody this essence to the best of your ability. You don’t have to be a saint; just remember and trust in what’s possible for you, and steer gently in that direction.
The rest of the Dreambook is about helping you to live as this best version of yourself. Follow the prompts to check in throughout the week and each day. Schedule your life in a way that honors the insights you discovered through the self-awareness processes. Every day is full of opportunities to demonstrate that you ARE your Highest Self.
There’s no way to get around the fact that the next moment is always uncertain, but you can reside in the certainty of who you choose to be. This essential work will yield a palpable experience of self-trust that means a tremendous amount in a topsy-turvy world.
Be well,
Peter

A few weeks ago I wrote about creativity – how instrumental it’s been in the development of our species and cultures, how much it adds to the enjoyment of our lives, and how it’s not optional. We all have creative power and we’re all using it, even if we’re not painters or musicians. When we recognize this and become conscious of our ongoing creative expression, this changes our relationship with life in a wonderful way.
That first step – the recognition that we shape life as it flows through us – is the most important. If you don’t consider yourself an artist or you feel you haven’t got a good imagination, it may be difficult to claim this creative power. But if you can see that your day is full of choices, perhaps you can accept that these many choices are a continuous stream of creative possibilities.
Today let’s look at a next step. Consider the palette you’re choosing from.
Imagine if the Universe said to itself, “That rock turned out pretty well. I think I’ll just keep creating rocks. I could try something new, but people might think I’m weird or I might fail, and besides I’m not very creative. Rocks are comfortable and easy and safe and they don’t rock the boat. Oh, I made a little joke. Hmm, better stick with rocks.”
While everything from your clothing choices to the food you make to the words you say are expressions of your creativity, it’s possible to create in way that’s essentially an unvarying repetition of the same patterns. If you wholeheartedly choose this because it’s sincerely what you want, that’s fine. But if you’re actually stuck, that’s another matter. Humans can get into ruts, creating strictly from a palette of past experiences.
Imagine a bright source of light – the Source. Against the center of the light is an old slide of a photo from when you were born. In front of that slide is another from infancy when your brother dropped you on your head. In front of that is a slide from your first day of preschool. There are millions of slides for every memorable thing that ever happened. Here at the present, the light that passes through this massive stack of slides is kind of dim and colored with an unfathomable array of images.
If you illuminate your life entirely from the trickle of light coming through this stack of slides, it’s difficult to see clearly, much less to evolve or to create in a way that feels exciting and alive. I’m not saying you should forsake your history. I just want to point out that the stack of slides only obscures one area of the light. It’s easy to get in the habit of seeing through the slides. It’s full of familiar points of reference. But there’s plenty of unfiltered Source light streaming around the stack, ready to spark something new.
What if you let a little of that light in?
When we open ourselves to living closer to the frontier of creation (letting more Source light through) rather than rearranging the collage of our past, we begin to create in the now. We become an active partner in the play of the Divine.
Instead of living on the autopilot drive of “What does my personality want [in order to feel in control, approved of, safe, loved, etc.]?” try asking, “What wants to come into existence through me?”
Instead of, “What would my history prompt me to create?” try asking “What does Source want to create?”
Instead of creating from an underlying feeling of insecurity or fear, consider, “If my only objective were to play as a conscious creator, what would I create?”
Or, “If I needed nothing, what would I create?”
Or, “If Unconditional Love were in my driver’s seat, what would I create?”
For further guidance I encourage you to check out Briana’s online program called Awakening the Creator. It’s excellent.
Be well,
Peter
