Ā Briana
Ā (my wife) started feeling drawn to do a different kind of healing work. She began getting strong intuitive impressions about what was at the root of people's challenges - sometimes health related, sometimes whole-life related - and this came with a sense of how to "intervene" on their behalf on a subtle level.
I think we were both at a loss as to how she should proceed with it. I suggested that she try it out on some volunteers and ask them to be to
tally honest about their experiences. She sat with these folks, either in person, or over the phone, asked them what they were struggling with, and dove in - sometimes offering practical advice, other times making energetic adjustments on their behalf. I don't think either of us has better words for it than that.
Anyway, I know how this sounds. I think most people have a hard time accepting healing modalities that aren't really tangible - myself included. So I tried to prep her for some lukewarm responses, saying things like, "This is pretty esoteric stuff ... itās not for everyone ... people find it hard to measure what exactly it's doing..." and so on.
Much to my surprise, the participants were all enthusiastic about their sessions. Everyone reported feeling some kind of alignment or affirmation - and that's nice - but what really surprised me was the number of people who felt like a longstanding block in their life had been removed, or that they felt notably better, or that an issue had resolved, or that their life had taken a turn for the better.
For some reason, I was one of the last people to experience it. I guess I didn't want to have to tell her it didn't do anything. I had a wrist pain that had been nagging me for a year (something called DeQuervain's tenosynovitis). I had received multiple massages, adjustments, and acupuncture treatments for it. I even wore a splint for a few months. Lots of things helped in the short term, but it kept coming back.
When Briana asked me what I wanted to work on, I said, āWell, we might as well go for my wrist.ā I actually felt kind of guilty in choosing it because I thought it was a *structural* issue and that nothing in the realm of āenergy workā was going to touch it. Sure enough, the next day I kept testing it out and it still hurt. Oh well, didnāt hurt to try. I decided not to report the bad news to Briana though. Iād wait until she asked me about it.
A week later, I noticed Iād been doing lots of manual labor with it ā hammering, lifting, sawing, drilling ā and it wasnāt bothering me. That was weird. I poked it and prodded it. I couldnāt get it to hurt. Now itās been a month and it hasnāt come back. I honestly donāt know what to say. Other thanā¦ maybe you should work with her if you feel called to.

It fills me with gratitude to realize that this July marks 13 years that weāve been relaxing, healing, and uplifting people at The Dragontree. Anniversaries are a thing Iāve given increasing attention to in the last decade or so ā and not just because Iāve been married to someone who likes it when I remember ours.
Anniversaries come up with surprising frequency in my treatment room. Patients often tell me that the anniversary of an injury or other trauma brings a return of certain bodily sensations or a change in consciousness. They report that they can perceive the approaching anniversary of a loved oneās death because subtle environmental cues ā the angle of the sun, the smell of the lilacs, the quiet of snowfall ā trigger feelings and memories.
For me and Briana, this time of year brings memories of the crazy stress we went through before the opening of our Boulder store. In the fall of 2012, we were āpreapprovedā by our bank for a commercial loan to build a spa in our beloved mountain town. But due to many personnel changes at the bank and lots of mishandling of the loan process, we ended up on a rollercoaster that involved finding a building and constructing the spa, spending every dime we had (and many borrowed dimes, too), and finally, eight months into it, being notified by the bank that they werenāt going to fund it after all. Ā
The bank pulled out exactly three years ago. In the summer of 2013, while desperately seeking a way to prevent this fiasco from taking down The Dragontree completely, we routinely brought our daughter to drama camp and watched her performances of Cinderella and The Grinch Who Stole Christmas. We hoped to maintain a sense of normalcy in our family life even as we wondered if weād still be able to afford our house payments if this project fell through. There were times when I was watching adorable children fixing their costumes and fumbling their lines, but instead of feeling lighthearted about what was happening in front of me, I was freaking out about what was happening with our business.
As a consequence, that camp is linked to an experience of stress that cut a deep groove in my mind and body. My daughter still goes there, and a few weeks ago, when Briana and I were taking our seats for a rousing performance of The Sneetches, I realized it was the anniversary of that ordeal. The sights, smells, and sounds of that place were triggering a jittery feeling in my body. I mentioned it to my wife. āMe too,ā she replied.
That anniversary was a good reminder to gauge how Iāve changed and healed since then, and to continue the healing process. A friend was telling me recently about the great relationship she has with her father, who happens to be deceased. She explained that she sees each anniversary of his death as a chance to revisit the terms of their relationship. I like that.
On the anniversary of our loan ordeal, I choose to continually rewrite the story ā reminding myself that ultimately we came out of it unscathed ā and to be grateful for all the good people and resources that helped us make it through. And on the anniversary of The Dragontree as a company, Iām choosing to recommit. We work well together.
I encourage you to try bringing more attention to the various anniversaries in your life ā of anything that made a deep groove, whether positive, negative, or mixed ā and in doing so, to notice how youāve processed and integrated this experience over the years. Thereās an opportunity to redefine the way you relate to this event, to renew your commitment, to learn, to be grateful, and to rewrite your story about what happened.
Thanks for sharing the past 13 years with us.
Be
so well,
Dr. Peter Borten

I was having a conversation with a friend the other day about the prevalence of life coaches and other professionals who aim to guide others toward reaching their goals or finding psycho-spiritual wellness. He was feeling concerned that there has been a certain commodification of personal growth. While I agreed that this is one facet of how weāve treated personal growth, I believe that on the whole the notion that we can change who we are has been good for us.Ā
The fundamental issue is that humans suffer. We feel overwhelmed, lost, fearful, confused, alone, angry, sad, etc. This suffering has been compounded by a trend toward disconnection from our foundations. Overall, humans have less of an everyday connection to nature, spirituality, and other humans than in the past. So, there has always been a need for help, and this need has become more acute recently.Ā Ā
Meanwhile, there has also been a trend in the last several decades toward more open discussion on the human psyche, spirit, and potential. Weāre freer than ever to speak about our thoughts and feelings, and we explore perspectives from other cultures. Weāre more willing than previous generations to see things in a new way, update our customs, change careers, and become someone different than weāve been. Thus, more than ever we have people who feel a calling to assist others in these ways. Do they deserve to be compensated for their help? I say yes.Ā
The ubiquity of such helpers is a good thing. There are a lot of people needing help. Further, the prevalence of such guides has made everyone up their game. No longer is an exotic outfit or accent qualification enough to be a guru. Consumers are more savvy. And a wonderful byproduct of the expansion of the personal growth field is that itās not limited to a particular socioeconomic class. There is an incredible abundance of free and cheap resources out there ā articles, podcasts, books, videos, and support groups.Ā
If you are able to work one-on-one with a coach you resonate with, there are lots of good reasons to do it:
Accountability: Often we donāt hold ourselves accountable for what we say weāre going to do and who we say we want to be. Having someone else to track us and remind us to stay on course is often all it takes for us to follow through.Ā Ā
Wisdom: A great coach has learned some things, and many can tap into a repository of wisdom that goes well beyond their personal experience.Ā
Holding Space: A good coach knows how to hold a container in which their clients can safely experience whatever theyāre struggling with, explore and unravel their challenges, and find their way to healing, growth, and evolution.Ā
Seeing Your Patterns of Dysfunction: One of the most useful functions a coach can serve is pointing out what you canāt see, like the way you keep sabotaging good jobs, or how to donāt maintain healthy boundaries in relationships. We canāt fix what we donāt see.Ā
Seeing Your Light: Often we have no problem seeing whatās āwrongā with us; the real hurdle is seeing whatās right. A good coach is there to point out your gifts, your value, your potential, and all the ways youāre managing with grace.
Hand Holding: While this is a role many a good friend has performed, itās another thing coaches can do for us. Sometimes we know where we want to go, we know what we need to do, but we just feel intimidated. Having someone hold our hand through it may feel like a silly thing to ask for, but if it gets us to do what weāre here to do, itās an invaluable service.Ā
Wishing you the guide who will coax out your greatness,Ā
Peter
