Glue of Life

I have the strangest feeling about this year.  Leading up to it and since it started, I’ve had a feeling that it’s going to be a good one.

The last several years have been some of the hardest of my life.  The last two have been the rebuilding after a complete purge of pretty much EVERYTHING that I had grown accustomed to.  Now, once again, everything has settled down and is fresh and new.  The difference is that I know that everything is fleeting and I could have to start over again at any time.  That is fine; however, I will enjoy this bit of calm.

I spent the New Year in Oakland with some dear friends.  The circumstances that led me there started with a friend who I’ve known for years.  He and I met in college and have kept track of each other since then.  He is a military man, so you can imagine where he’s been over the last 10 years.

My college friend and I have a mutual friend in the Oakland area and he was flying out to visit him and insisted that I meet them down there.  ‘We never know how long we will walk this earth’ was the argument.  I couldn’t agree more, so I made the trip.

It was a couple of my worlds colliding, but such a pleasure to see.  It was my friend from college and a group of musicians that had basically become a family over years of touring together.  My college friend was friends with one of them from high school.  It was an East Coast reunion in the heart of California.

Indeed, we only walk this world one time.  Take advantage of these opportunities as they arise.  Know that you will remember and talk about some of these things for years to come. Tell your friends – your extended family – how much you care about them.

These simple things are the glue of life.
